Course SummaryAs part of the vehicle diagnostics training series, this one-day Automotive CAN Bus and Network Systems course delivers a focused exploration of vehicle communication protocols and practical diagnostic strategies. Designed for technicians working with increasingly complex vehicle electronics, this course builds a strong foundation in network architecture, ECU communication, and fault isolation.
Delegates will examine the structure and operation of CAN Bus systems, including message arbitration, identifiers, bit timing, and bus termination. Emphasis is placed on distinguishing high-speed and low-speed networks and understanding the role of gateway modules in cross-network communication. Hands-on activities develop confidence in the use of essential diagnostic tools, including multimeters, scan tools, oscilloscopes, and CAN Bus analysers. Technicians will interpret U-codes, communication-related DTCs, and manufacturer-specific fault strategies using live data and diagnostic flowcharts. The course includes instruction on reading network topologies from wiring diagrams and applying this knowledge to detect open circuits, shorts, interference, and no-communication conditions. Delegates will also explore real-world scenarios involving intermittent communication faults and failed module detection. With a strong emphasis on practical application, this course equips participants with diagnostic strategies to accurately troubleshoot in-vehicle network systems and reduce unnecessary part replacement. It is ideal for technicians, diagnostic specialists, and advanced apprentices looking to expand their understanding of automotive communication networks and CAN Bus technology. On completion, you will receive a certificate of attendance which can be used towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits.

RequirementsThere are no formal entry requirements for this course, however, you should currently be working in the automotive industry as a vehicle technician or similar. The attendance of the Automotive Electrical Testing & Diagnosis course prior to undertaking this training will reinforce concepts used in scan tool operation.
This course is recommended for progression onto further diagnostic training. This course is a mixture of theory and practical and will require suitable clothing for conducting workshop activities. Safety boots are required for all technical work shop based activities. You will be unable to participate in the course if you do not wear the appropriate PPE. We reserve the right to exclude a candidate who we suspect is under the influence of alcohol or drugs (the candidate may also need to make alternative arrangements for onward journeys). |
